Why Visiting Hawaii Is a Dream Come True

Visiting Hawaii is more than just taking a vacation—it is stepping into a place where beauty, culture, and adventure exist in harmony. For many people, Hawaii represents paradise. The name itself conjures images of turquoise water, lush green mountains, fragrant plumeria flowers, and sunsets that paint the horizon in brilliant shades of gold and crimson.

For me, this dream became reality when I left the chilly 30-degree weather of New Jersey and boarded a plane that would carry me across the continent and over the Pacific Ocean to the islands of Hawaii. The journey was long—two flights, a four-hour layover, and nearly a full day of travel—but the moment the plane descended into Honolulu, all the exhaustion faded into awe. The view from the window was unforgettable: sparkling waves breaking along the shore, the mountains standing tall in the distance, and the warm evening sun greeting us from the sky.

Hawaii

Hawaii felt like another world. Everything was different—the rhythm of life, the friendly spirit of “aloha,” and even the air itself, which seemed to carry a sweet fragrance of flowers and ocean breeze. Yet what struck me most was not just the scenery, but the sense of peace and welcome that instantly wrapped around me.

Adjusting to the five-hour time difference was a challenge, especially after a 4:30 a.m. start at home and an arrival in Honolulu at 7 p.m., which felt like midnight to us. Still, that first evening, we wanted to eat, rest, and prepare ourselves for the adventure ahead. And what an adventure it would be—ten days filled with breathtaking sights, unforgettable family moments, and the joy of exploring a place that feels like heaven on earth.

Visiting Hawaii was never something I thought I would do. I’m not a swimmer, so snorkeling and surfing weren’t on my list. I had imagined that the cost, long flights, and logistics would deter me. But sometimes life has other plans. My daughter and son-in-law were stationed in Hawaii with the United States Navy, and when she had her first child, I knew I had to visit. That trip gave me not just the chance to meet my first grandchild, but also the opportunity to fall in love with Hawaii itself.

Planning Your Hawaii Vacation

Planning a trip to Hawaii requires thought, flexibility, and preparation. Because it’s one of the most popular destinations in the world, timing your purchases and making smart choices can make the difference between an affordable trip and one that stretches your budget.

Best Time to Visit Hawaii

The best months to purchase flights to Hawaii are April, May, September, and early October. During these months, demand is lower, and prices are significantly better compared to peak holiday times. Avoid traveling around Christmas and New Year’s if possible—tickets skyrocket. I learned this the hard way when I purchased flights in late October for a December trip and discovered that prices had already increased by $400 per ticket.

Finding Accommodations in Hawaii

Hawaii offers a diverse range of accommodations, from luxurious beachfront resorts to budget-friendly hotels and vacation rentals. Since my daughter was in the military, we had initially planned to stay at lodging reserved for military families, which is available at a fraction of the cost of resort hotels. Unfortunately, those rooms were already booked. Instead, I turned to Groupon, where I found a great deal at the Ambassador Hotel Waikiki.

Our room was clean and comfortable, equipped with three twin beds, a microwave, and a refrigerator. The property offered amenities like an outdoor pool, a gym, and a laundry room. We were even given reusable water bottles at check-in. The location was perfect—right on the Waikiki strip, within walking distance of restaurants, shopping, and beaches. Every morning, I enjoyed stepping onto the balcony to watch the sunrise light up the island.

Packing Tips for Hawaii

No matter how many times I tell myself not to overpack, I always do. For a ten-day trip, I had checked luggage and packed backpacks with electronics and essentials. My best advice is to make a list before you go. Bring travel-sized toiletries, sunscreen (though I recommend purchasing it locally to avoid carrying large bottles home), and insect repellent—mosquitoes can be relentless in certain areas. Comfortable shoes are a must, especially if you plan to hike. Water shoes are also helpful since many beaches have rocky areas and sharp shells.

Glasses wearers should always bring a backup pair, as I found out when mine broke unexpectedly. Thankfully, there was a LensCrafters in Honolulu that replaced them within an hour. If you wear contacts, bring extras in case of an emergency. Pack any prescriptions in your carry-on to avoid issues if luggage is delayed.

Hawaii’s weather is warm year-round, but evenings can bring a light chill, especially near the water. A sweater or light jacket is handy. Lastly, don’t forget a neck pillow for the long flights—it made a world of difference for me.

Adventure Sports in Hawaii

One of the most thrilling experiences I had was parasailing. I booked through Groupon with Paradise Water Sports for $49 per person. The staff was warm and entertaining, keeping us laughing the entire time. Floating above the ocean, watching the island stretch out beneath me, was surreal. My son joined me, and we both agreed it was an experience worth repeating.parasailing

For those who love water, Hawaii is paradise. Snorkeling at Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve is a must. The bay, formed by volcanic eruptions millions of years ago, is home to vibrant marine life. Admission is $7.50 for adults, with free entry for children under 12 and Hawaiian residents.

Hiking enthusiasts will find endless trails, ranging from the easier walks at botanical gardens to the more challenging treks up volcanic craters. Just remember to wear the right shoes and bring water.

Family-Friendly Activities in Hawaii

Traveling with children in Hawaii is surprisingly easy. Attractions like the Honolulu Zoo and Waikiki Aquarium are affordable and fun for kids. Beaches like Kuhio Beach are safe and welcoming for families. Shopping at Ala Moana Center Mall added a touch of holiday cheer when we posed for photos with Santa Claus—dressed in a Hawaiian shirt!

Luau

Traditional Hawaiian Luau

The luau at the Hale Koa Hotel was a highlight of our trip. From the moment we arrived, we were greeted with seashell necklaces and rum punch, and I felt a sense of being embraced by Hawaiian tradition. The meal was unforgettable—Kalua pork cooked in an underground oven, teriyaki beef, seaweed salad, sweet potatoes with coconut, and much more.

The entertainment was just as rich, featuring dances and music from Hawaii, Samoa, Tahiti, and New Zealand. The fire knife dancers stole the show, but the hula was mesmerizing in its grace and storytelling. Seeing a couple honored for being married for over 60 years brought tears to my eyes.

Spirituality and Serenity

At the Byodo-In Temple, I experienced a profound sense of peace. I lit incense, rang the Sacred Bell, and offered a prayer. Surrounded by koi ponds, lush gardens, and intricate architecture, I felt negativity lift from me. Hawaii is not only a place of beauty but also a haven of healing and spiritual renewal.
