Visiting Jersey City: Haunted Landmarks & History on a US Ghost Adventures Tour

Walking into Jersey City’s Haunted Past

On a cool, rainy evening, I set out on a journey like no other: the US Ghost Adventures Tour in Jersey City, New Jersey. The weather made the night feel just right for an adventure into the unknown.

Unlike ordinary walking tours, this was more than ghost stories told for thrills. Every stop revealed hidden layers of history—from colonial settlers to wartime tragedy, from architectural marvels to whispered legends. As a lover of both tradition and storytelling, I found the experience to be not just entertainment but also a profound reminder of how the past still lingers among us.

The night would take us through old buildings, special squares, and schools that seemed to whisper forgotten stories. Each place had both a history and a ghostly legend. This made our evening walk not just a stroll but also a lesson in local history, showing that sometimes the spooky side helps us remember the past.

The Beacon: From Medical Marvel to Haunted Legacy

One of the most striking stops on the Jersey City ghost tour is The Beacon, formerly known as the Jersey City Medical Center. Built during the Great Depression as a Works Progress Administration (WPA) project, its Art Deco towers once stood as a symbol of progress and resilience. At the heart of this complex was the Margaret Hague Maternity Hospital, named after the mother of Jersey City’s powerful Mayor Frank Hague. The Beacon in Jersey City, former Margaret Hague Maternity Hospital, haunted landmark on ghost tour.

For decades, the hospital was one of the busiest maternity wards in the United States—so well-regarded that some of the nation’s most famous figures were born there. Yet where life begins, stories of sorrow and lingering spirits are never far behind. Our tour guide shared tales of phantom cries echoing through its now-residential halls, and shadowy figures glimpsed in corridors that once bustled with doctors and nurses.

Walking past the building, its imposing presence seems to radiate energy. The stories of mothers, children, and families who experienced both joy and heartbreak here remain woven into the very bricks.

Bergen Square: Where Love and War Left Ghostly Marks

Another remarkable stop was Bergen Square, one of the oldest settlements in New Jersey. Founded by Dutch settlers in the 1600s, it became a hub of colonial life and later, a witness to Revolutionary War struggles.

The square is thought to be haunted by the spirits of John and Jane Van Reypen, two lovers whose relationship was cut short by war. Separated in life, they are said to walk the square together in death, hand in hand, forever linked.

For me, Bergen Square embodied the tour’s deeper purpose: it wasn’t just about chills, but about connecting with the human stories that shaped Jersey City. The square’s cobblestones and old-world layout stood as a reminder of how history endures, even as skyscrapers rise around it.

Old Bergen Church Cemetery: Legends Among the Tombstones

No ghost tour would be complete without a cemetery, and Jersey City’s Old Bergen Church Cemetery did not disappoint. Established in the 17th century, it is one of the oldest burial grounds in New Jersey, with ties to some of the city’s founding families.

Our guide shared a story that Washington Irving himself may have drawn inspiration from this cemetery while crafting “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.” Whether myth or truth, the thought of the famous American author walking these grounds was enchanting. Amid the rows of weathered stones, people whispered about apparitions seen moving between graves and voices heard when the cemetery was otherwise empty. Standing there, I felt the stillness of centuries pressing in around us—history not confined to books, but resting tangibly beneath our feet.

Dickenson High School

Dickinson High School: Halls of Learning and Lingering Spirits

Although our tour did not include William L. Dickinson High School, our guide gave us some history. Built in the early 1900s, this imposing structure at 2 Palisade Avenue, Jersey City, NJ 07306, is the city’s oldest secondary school, and many locals believe its long history has left behind lingering energy.

Over the years, students and staff have shared unsettling accounts—phantom footsteps in empty corridors, shadowy figures in basement tunnels, and the eerie sensation of unseen eyes watching them. Some even say former teachers remain tied to the building, unwilling to leave their posts.

While I didn’t personally step inside, hearing these stories reminded me of how schools serve as symbols of continuity across generations. If the legends are true, perhaps the spirits that linger there are simply a testament to the enduring presence of learning, memory, and community.jersey city nj

St. Aedan’s Church and the Jersey Devil

The tour also touched upon St. Aedan’s Church, a beautiful structure with soaring architecture and a haunting reputation. Some legends suggest that even the Jersey Devil, the cryptid said to haunt the Pine Barrens, has made appearances here in urban form.

Whether or not such sightings are true, the church’s shadowy interior and history of whispered encounters make it a place where the sacred and supernatural intersect.

Bonus Tour

Additional Haunted Landmarks in Jersey City

Although my personal ghost adventure focused on the main route, US Ghost Adventures offers a bonus tour that takes curious visitors even deeper into Jersey City’s haunted history. These additional stops highlight the darker corners of the city, blending folklore, architectural beauty, and eerie experiences that extend the story beyond the standard walk.

Margaret Williams Theatre – A Stage for Spirits

On the campus of New Jersey City University stands the Margaret Williams Theatre, a venue long celebrated for its performances but also whispered about for its paranormal activity. Actors and staff have reported unsettling experiences: phantom voices backstage, sudden cold drafts during rehearsals, and the uncanny feeling of invisible eyes watching from the empty seats.

This blend of artistry and the supernatural makes the theatre a compelling stop on the bonus tour—a reminder that even spaces of creativity can carry echoes of those who came before.

Saint Boniface Church – Disturbing Energies

The Saint Boniface Church offers a very different kind of haunting. Long abandoned, this once-sacred space has earned a reputation for unnerving encounters. Visitors have reported objects moving without explanation, oppressive feelings of dread, and even accounts of hostile presences.

Saint Boniface embodies the darker side of paranormal lore. It stands as a chilling reminder that not every haunting is a quiet echo of history—some carry energies best left undisturbed.

Ghost Tours as Living History Lessons

By the end of the night, I realized that ghost tours are not merely about scares—they’re about connection. Every story shared on the US Ghost Adventures Tour anchored me more deeply to Jersey City’s heritage. The blend of legend, architecture, and emotion created a lasting impression that reading history alone never could.

From the grandeur of The Beacon to the quiet graves of Old Bergen Cemetery, each stop reminded me that the past is never truly gone—it lingers, shaping the present in ways both seen and unseen.
