• From Albany: Take I-87 south to I-84 east, then exit at Route 9D into Beacon. The drive is about 1 hour and 30 minutes.
• From New Jersey: Take the Garden State Parkway or I-287 to the New York State Thruway (I-87), then connect to I-84 east.

Parking is available at the Beacon waterfront near the ferry dock, but spaces can be limited during peak visiting days. Arrive early to secure a spot.

A young Dutch girl named Pollepel (or Polly Pell) was said to have been stranded on the ice of the Hudson River during a brutal winter. She was rescued by her future husband, who guided her to the small island. Out of gratitude and love, the island was named for her—Pollepel.

Native American Beliefs
Even before the Dutch settlers arrived, Native American tribes considered the island sacred and somewhat haunted. They believed spirits dwelled there, warning travelers of danger or bad fortune if they stayed too long. Because of this, many Native Americans avoided the island after sunset.

The story of Bannerman Castle begins with Francis Bannerman VI, a Scottish immigrant who arrived in New York as a child in the mid-19th century. His family struggled financially, and young Francis began collecting and reselling scrap metal and military goods to support them. This humble start blossomed into one of the largest military surplus businesses in the world.

By the late 1800s, Bannerman had acquired massive quantities of leftover weapons, ammunition, and military equipment, much of it from the Spanish-American War. He needed a safe place to store his growing inventory, away from New York City’s densely populated neighborhoods.

The Birth of Bannerman’s Island Arsenal

In 1900, Bannerman purchased Pollepel Island for use as his personal storage facility. But Francis Bannerman was not content with building ordinary warehouses—he wanted something grand, something that reflected his Scottish roots and entrepreneurial spirit.

Architectural Marvel

Bannerman designed the castle himself, drawing inspiration from Scottish castles. The structures included turrets, crenellated walls, arched windows, and decorative flourishes.
